Secret is Out: Oprah Has a Half-sister

Image via WikipediaOprah has been putting out promotions that she has a big secret to tell, and she has told it, she has a half-sister that she didn't know about.  After lots of speculation, Oprah Winfrey confirmed via DNA testing that a woman by the name of Patricia is in fact her sister even though their mother denied it for years.

Oprah and her new found sister met last thanksgiving in Oprah's mothers home in Milwaukee.  Oprah said that it was one of the greatest surprises in her life and it felt like it related to the movie "Beloved", where a daughter comes back from the dead.



According to sources who saw video of the two woman meeting, they were inseparable from the moment they met and embraced each other for a long time.

Oprah was very impressed with her sister Patricia, who at no point tried to milk Oprah or the media for money to sell her unique story. According to sources, Patricia knew for a long time but didn't know how to approach the situation.


Oprah's mom denied having the daughter, all the way up to last October, where Oprah confronted her with the truth, and claimed that she denied it because she was so ashamed she had given up her daughter.  Here is what Oprah's mom said in an interview:

"I thought it was a terrible thing that I had done," Lee said, adding that she felt she wouldn't be able to take care of another child and get off welfare if she had kept her. Still, she said, "I did think about the baby. I went back looking for her and they told me she had left." 


It is great news for Oprah, who has said in the past that she doesn't have too much family that she trust to speak of.  It seems that this is the year for Oprah Winfrey, with the launch of her new network OWN, the re-union with her long lost sister, and the end of her hugely successful show.
